However, recently it has been stated that this is more effective in cases of Asian, Hispanic, and black women. This study has been made at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

As per this study, if one is consuming a balanced diet then she will suffer from a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, especially if she falls in the category of minority women. As the number of type2 diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate, these findings can have a serious impact on the health and lifestyle of women suffering from the type2 diabetes. This study is available online in Diabetes care. It was posted on 15th January 2015.

If recent findings are to be believed, then more than 29 million people across the United States of America and more than 47 million people across the world have diabetes. According to WHO (World Health Organization) If the rate goes on increasing, then by the end of 2030 it will be the 7th largest cause of death worldwide. One of the major reasons why individuals suffer from this ailment is because of excess body weight as well as physical inactivity. In fact, there are reports of diet being linked with diabetes, but it was mainly so in the case of white people. But the current research is on the minority women.

There researchers conducted this research on several thousands of minority women to come to the conclusion. To be precise, there were:

  • non-Hispanic white women – 156,030
  • Asian – 2,026]
  • Hispanic – 2,053
  • Black women – 2,307

While conducting this survey, several factors were taken into consideration. Some of the important ones include: family history, age, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, Pre and post menopausal status and symptoms, BMR and calories taken. In order to arrive at the conclusion, the researchers kept a score of the components that played a significant role in causing type2 diabetes. The higher score was an indication of the risk factor while the lower score indicated otherwise. Hence, it was observed that a better diet intake improved the chances of having low risk from type2 diabetes while an irregular diet increased the risk from type2 diabetes.

In case of both white women and minority women it was seen that if they were exposed to higher intake of beverages and cold drinks, red meats and higher glycemic index foods, then they had a higher chance of diabetes while those women who ate more of high cereal fiber foods per day they were prone to less risk and threat from type2 diabetes.

As per, Walter Willett of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard Chan, if we do not put this knowledge into practice then there is no point in collecting the information. All the information’s collected have to be put into use if you want to see the desired changes.

Diet plays an integral role in one’s health and well being. If you follow an irregular diet and binge on fast foods and aerated drinks, then you are exposing your body to all the harmful side effects and as such you will suffer from poor health and different types of diseases. And as diabetes often leads to heart attack or stroke, it is extremely important that you pay attention to what you eat. As long as you are having a balanced diet there is nothing to worry about. It is completely a misconception that due to your diabetes, you need to have a bland and simple diet. If you keep a track of the calories consumed by you, there is nothing to worry about. So once you start following a proper diet you can keep the type2 diabetes well under control.

DRI Pilot Clinical Trial to Test a New Site for a BioHub Platform https://www.thesymptomsofdiabetes.org/dri-pilot-clinical-trial-to-test-biohub-platform/ Mon, 02 Feb 2015 06:30:55 +0000 https://www.thesymptomsofdiabetes.org/?p=595 Read More →]]> A New Site for a BioHub Platform – DRI all set to undertake anew test!

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given approval to the Diabetes Research Institute to go ahead with the Phase I/II clinical trial where the omentum will be tested. The omentum is inside the abdomen and the lining looks like an apron. This test will try to find out if it is a suitable location for a DRI Biohub. In this initial trial, the researcher will transplant into the omentum the donor islet cells within a scaffold that is biodegradable in nature and that was initially considered as the potential BioHub platform. This scaffold is created out of the patient’s own plasma (which comprises the liquid part of the blood). The reasearchers are taking the islet cells and combining it with the plasma. Thrombin, a commonly used enzyme is also mixed with this preparation, which is then applied to the omentum. When all the components are mixed, it creates a gel like solution that sticks to the omentum and ensures that the islets remain in place. This portion will then be folded and stitched to create a pouch around the scaffold.

Over a period of time, the human body will absorb this gel leaving behind the islet cells while new blood vessels are formed that will help to support the survival and function of the cell. All those individuals upon whom the trial will be carried out, will be administered immunosuppressive drugs.

The DRI is now interviewing individuals for this clinical trial and other trials that will be carried out in the future. They are trying to make a databank of as many individuals as possible so that the chances of donor matching and the utilization of pancreases are high.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this pilot clinical trial testing the DRI BioHub?

This clinical trial is Phase I/II that will represent the first stage of testing the omentum as an alternative site inside the body where one can transplant the islet cells. It will also test one of the platforms to see whether it is suitable for DRI biohub. This bio hub is a platform technology is made up of several components that work together in order to mimic the native pancreas.

When will this pilot trial begin?

The DRI’s clinical department is aggressively interviewing patients as it wants to begin this clinical trial by the end of the year.

What are the criteria for this pilot trial?

The patient has to be within the age group of 18 to 60 years with type1 diabetes.

Severe hypoglycemia

Unaware that the individual has low blood sugar level.

Will anti-rejection drugs be needed in this trial?

Yes. Although the DRI’s aim is to eliminate the use of any systemic drug, but initially the immunosuppression drug will be used as is done in case of islet processing and matching criteria. But over a period of time this will be avoided.

Will everyone who participates be given the same treatment or will a placebo be involved?

Each and every individual participating in the test will be given the same treatment. No demarcation will be made. Placebo is not used in organ and tissue transplantation studies however, they do compare the current trial results with the previously conducted tests in order to determine the effects of a new therapy.

This research, if successful, will open many doors for the cure and treatment of diabetes. Individuals who suffer from this ailment, usually are unable to lead a normal lifestyle as they have food restrictions and different checkups and insulin injections to take and so on. In short, one needs to be very careful. A little bit of ignorance and it can turn serious. Hence, one needs to be extremely careful and follow the doctor’s instruction to the last letter. The success of this research will make sure that the insulin level is well under control so that the concerned person can lead a healthy life.

Innovations in Diabetes Treatment including Glifozins, Incretins, DPP-4 inhibitors & more https://www.thesymptomsofdiabetes.org/innovations-diabetes-treatment/ Fri, 30 Jan 2015 15:30:03 +0000 https://www.thesymptomsofdiabetes.org/?p=593 Read More →]]> India is often referred to as the Diabetes capital in the world. More than 50 million individuals are diabetic. As per a recent survey, by the year 2030 is here, 101.2 million people will be affected in India alone. The alarming rate at which this threat is spreading across the globe, the health care industry is at a challenge of finding the right drugs and medicines. You will come across many medicines created for type1 and type2 diabetes, but the limitations have prevented to discovery of new and advanced medicines. The currently available medicines are effective at restoring the normal blood glucose levels, but they cannot reduce the production of glucose or increase the absorption of carbohydrates by the intestine.

Promising innovations in diabetes treatment:

In the month of January, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved of 3 drugs that aims to improve the blood sugar control level in patients suffering from type2 diabetes. One of these drugs is the Nesina that has alogliptin as the new active ingredient. When one intakes this medicine, the release of insulin is stimulated after a meal and as such the blood sugar level is better controlled. It is important to control the production of blood sugar level because if you are suffering from type2 disease, then your body either does not produce insulin or is resistant to the effects to insulin thereby worsening your condition. The increased level in blood glucose is not good as it can lead to heart attacks, stroke, kidney damage and so on.

How the new drugs can change your life?

  • Glifozins: The sodium glucose co transporter is present along the kidney nephrons. It helps to reabsorb the glucose from the urine and transports it back into the blood. However, the SGLT-2 helps to prevent the re-absorption of the glucose in the blood. As a result the passing of glucose through the urine is increased. A drug named Dapagliflozincreated on these lines has already been approved for use in Europe and Australia.
  • Incretins: these hormones are secreted by the gut after a few minutes of consuming a meal. This hormone helps to regulate the amount of insulin secreted. Liraglutide popularly known as Victoza and GLP-1. Exenatide well known as Byetta are synthetic receptors that are available in different pharmaceutical stores. These drugs perform the same role as that of incretins.
  • Artificial pancreas or insulin pump with integrated real time glucose monitoring system: The MiniMed Paradigm Veo from Medtron Inc, available in the markets of Europe functions as the artificial pancreas and makes sure that the right amount of glucose level is maintained at all the times.
  • Betatrophin: the scientists at the Hravard Stem Cell Institute have discovered that betatrophin, a hormone can control the production of insulin in the beta cells. However, this research has been carried out on mice. If this research is successful in humans, then it can completely change the way diabetes is treated.
  • Islet cell transplantation: the islet cell transplantation is no longer a myth. As per a new research conducted by the scientists at Bell Gurion University in association with the other researchers in Hrvard, Columbia and Standford university it is possible to transplant the cells in the pancreas. This in the long run will make sure that the glucose level is well under control.

Diabetes as we all known is a lifestyle disorder that can lead to several other ailments like cardiovascular attack, stroke, kidney damage, vision and so on. Hence, it is extremely important that absolute and precise treatments are available. As a result, researchers and scientists across the globe are finding out ways and means by which they will look into the matter and discover drugs and treatments that will help to keep the glucose level under control.

Glucose Transport Structure and their Functioning – a close up view! https://www.thesymptomsofdiabetes.org/glucose-transport-structure-functioning/ Wed, 28 Jan 2015 13:14:34 +0000 https://www.thesymptomsofdiabetes.org/?p=570 Read More →]]> Many people assume diabetes to be a disease that increases the urine flow and that the individual suffering from it is subjected to a strict diet. Well, this is partially true. But the entire concept is not that simple. The different researches over the years have shown how diabetes can practically affect your health in a much more serious way causing other different ailments along the way. Do you know that heart attack and stroke can be due to diabetes?

Over the years different researches have been conducted to see what causes diabetes, what are the side effects, how serious it can be and so on. However, one of the biggest drawbacks in the field of the research work in diabetes is the lack of proper funding. As a result, it often gets difficult to successfully complete a research work. But there are different awards that one can apply to in order to carry out their research. Something that is very similar to what Dr Gonen faced.

In the year 2009, Dr Gonen who has applied for the American Association Career Development award, had a fairly new lab where he was carrying out his research on glucose transport. At this point he was not sure whether he would be able to carry out his research work as most of his funding got invested behind setting up the lab. But thankfully he got assistance as he was selected for the Career Development Award and he was able to carry out his research work. Although the project took several years to get completed, finally the research was successful.

In his research, Dr Gonen studies the role played by the proteins that helps to regulate energy balance. Proteins are believed to the molecular machinery that carries out most of the functions performed by the cells. The protein structure varies depending on the DNA code that differs from one individual to another. These proteins tend to form a 3 dimensional structure that allows them to function properly. However a small mutation can disrupt the protein’s structure. Depending on the severity of the mutation, the protein may not be able to carry out any of its functions anymore and this can lead to several diseases. The key protein that plays a significant role in regulating blood glucose is referred to as the glucose transporter. It is present within the cell membrane and plays an important role in transporting the glucose from the blood to the inside of the cell where it will be used for energy purposes. Through this research, Dr Gonen has tried to study the structure of this glucose transporter in an in depth way.

Dr Gonen has beautifully analyzed this structural study with an analogy. According to him, if an archeologist unearths a car, several thousand years down the line, he may not be able to confirm what was it used for. But by analyzing the different parts of the car, he will be able to deduce the function of the car and how it was used. In the same way structural biologists will be able to examine how the 3 dimensional shape of the proteins determines how the proteins will function. Moreover, with the help of this structural information, it will be easy to develop the medicines that will activate or minimize the protein’s function, thereby helping to cure the different diseases like diabetes and so on.

This research has paved way for the development of medicines that can be used to cure diabetes. In the well known Nature Communications journal, Dr. Gonen has described how the structure of glucose transporter protein actually is. Through this research he has shown how the glucose gets attracted and gets transferred to the protein located inside the shell. This research in the long run will enable other researchers to speed up the transport in case of high blood glucose and slow it down in case of low blood glucose.
